Tesla opens reservations for new Roadster
Words: Andrew Sluys
Almost an entire decade after Tesla officially unveiled the second-generation Roadster, it might actually go on sale.
Before that, the American brand is preparing to unveil an updated version of the coupe, which will break cover on October 2.

This redesigned version of the Roadster was teased with an image of a spaceship-looking rear end of a car.
Back in 2017, the second-generation Tesla Roadstar was unveiled as a traditional high-performance EV.
It was meant to go on sale in 2020, but has faced numerous delays, and in that time, has undergone multiple revisions.
At the time, it promised acceleration from 0–97km/h in 1.9 seconds, a top speed exceeding 400km/h and around 1000km of range. Pricing was announced at US$200,000 for the regular model and US$250,000 for the Founders Series.

A limited-edition version developed in conjunction with SpaceX was also shown, featuring cold-gas thrusters to improve performance.
It’s unclear as to whether or not this will make the production version, but considering the demonstration will take place at a SpaceX facility, it seems likely.
On top of this imminent unveiling, Tesla has also opened international reservations for this new Roadster.
New Zealanders are able to secure themselves a Roadster for a $7,000 deposit. A follow-up deposit of $66,000 will then be required within 10 days.
