New Transporter Sportline brings GTI looks to VW’s big van

Words: Andrew Sluys

Volkswagen has unveiled a new Transporter Sportline, which borrows sporty looks from the brand’s GTI range.

As is the case for other GTI models, this new Transporter will sit at the top of the line-up.

Equipped with a sporty bodykit, 19-inch alloy wheels, and lowered suspension, it’s clear Volkswagen is looking to take on the likes of Ford’s Transit Sport Custom.

It follows the formula of the Sportline from the previous generation with a “dogbone-style” front bumper, and a red stripe across the grille.

The bigger wheels fill out the guards, and are helped by the Eibach lowering springs, which drop the ride height by 29mm.

The changes to the inside of the van aren’t as extreme as the exterior, but it gets metal scuff plates, and eco-leather seats with red stitching.

The Transporter Sportline can be had in either Panel Van or Kombi versions, and in a short or long wheelbase configuration.

Despite the sporty new exterior look, Volkswagen hasn’t changed anything on the performance front.

In European markets, it is offered with diesel, plug-in hybrid, or pure electric powertrain options, with the e-Transporter topping the bunch at 210kW.

To celebrate the anniversary of the iconic Transporter, Volkswagen is also offering a Sportline 75 edition.

This special edition van is finished in Moss Green, gets green interior stitching, and features a numbered plaque in the cabin.

Considering Volkswagen New Zealand’s limited Transporter offering, with just one commercial variant on offer, it’s unlikely the Sportline will go on sale locally.

This doesn’t mean it’s completely ruled out though, as Volkswagen New Zealand has previously managed to secure anniversary units of other vehicles.
