Volkswagen has shown off the silhouette of the next-generation Golf for the first time, a model that is set to be exclusively electric.
Dubbed the ID.Golf, according to the official file name, this hatch will follow the naming convention of VW’s other electric vehicles such as the ID.Polo.
From the teaser image shared by the German brand, the hatch looks reminiscent of the Mk4 Golf, with rounded but box-like styling.
This new model is expected to retain its strong c-pillar that has been a staple on the Golf for a number of decades now.
It will also get a large roof-mounted spoiler, hinting at performance, meaning we might see the first all-electric GTI or R model in this generation.
As this incoming Golf will be exclusively electric, Volkswagen reportedly plans to sell it alongside the current eight-generation model, giving buyers the choice between petrol or electric power.
On the inside, the ID.Golf is expected to follow in the footsteps of the ID.Polo with physical controls, and retro styling.
Beneath this new exterior, the ID.Golf will ride on Volkswagen’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which was developed with Rivian.
It will make use of 800-volt architecture, and likely give buyers the option of single motor or dual-motor power.
Given this all-wheel drive capability, a hotter R variant is also expected out of the ID.Golf range. It is expected to go on sale in 2028.
