SUV or Hatchback: Which One Actually Suits You?

SUV or Hatchback: Which One Actually Suits You?

Words: Gwen Li

Choosing your next car is not always about finding the biggest vehicle or the one with the longest list of features. It is about finding a car that works for the way you actually live.

For many buyers, the choice comes down to two popular options: an SUV or a hatchback.

SUVs offer extra space, a higher driving position and plenty of versatility, while hatchbacks are often easier to manoeuvre, practical around town and surprisingly spacious.

So, which one actually suits you?

Think about how you use your car

Before comparing specifications, start with your everyday routine.

Do you mainly drive around town? Are you regularly carrying children, passengers or sports gear? Do you spend a lot of time on the open road? Or do you simply need something that makes the daily commute and supermarket run easy?

The right choice depends less on whether an SUV or hatchback is considered better and more on which one fits your lifestyle.

Why choose an SUV?

SUVs have become a popular choice for New Zealand drivers, and it is easy to understand why.

One of their biggest advantages is space. Depending on the model, an SUV can offer generous room for passengers, luggage, prams, sports equipment and everything else that comes with a busy lifestyle.

The higher seating position is another feature many drivers enjoy. It can provide a different view of the road and may make getting in and out of the vehicle easier for some passengers.

An SUV could suit you if you regularly carry several passengers, need plenty of boot space or simply prefer a larger and more versatile vehicle.

However, bigger is not always better. Larger SUVs can be more challenging to park in tight spaces and factors such as fuel consumption, tyres and other running costs are worth considering before you buy.

Why choose a hatchback?

Do not underestimate the humble hatchback.

For everyday driving, a hatchback can offer an excellent balance of practicality and convenience. Its smaller dimensions can make navigating busy streets, shopping centres and tight car parks easier.

Hatchbacks can also offer more usable space than you might expect. With rear seats that can usually be folded down, there can be plenty of room for shopping, luggage and other everyday items.

If most of your driving involves commuting, running errands and travelling around town, you may find that a hatchback gives you all the space you need without the additional size of an SUV.

What about running costs?

The purchase price is only one part of the cost of owning a vehicle.

Fuel or electricity consumption, insurance, servicing, tyres and other maintenance costs should all be considered when comparing cars.

A smaller hatchback may use less fuel than a larger SUV, but this will vary considerably between models, engines and powertrains. A hybrid SUV, for example, may have very different running costs from a large petrol SUV.

Rather than comparing SUVs and hatchbacks as broad categories, compare the actual vehicles you are considering.

How much space do you really need?

It is easy to choose a larger vehicle because you might need the extra space someday. But think about what you carry during a normal week.

If your boot usually contains a laptop bag and a few bags of groceries, a large SUV may offer more space than you regularly use.

On the other hand, if you are frequently loading a pram, children’s gear, sports equipment, luggage or bulky items, that additional room could make everyday life much easier.

When viewing a vehicle, open the boot, fold the seats and think about whether your usual belongings would fit comfortably.

Consider where you drive and park

Your surroundings matter too.

If you regularly drive through busy urban areas or park in tight spaces, a compact hatchback may be easier to live with.

If your driving involves longer journeys, carrying more passengers or regularly travelling with plenty of gear, the extra space of an SUV may be useful.

Remember that SUVs also vary significantly in size. A compact SUV may give you some of the advantages of an SUV without feeling dramatically larger than a hatchback.

Take both for a test drive

Specifications can help narrow down your options, but they cannot tell you how comfortable you will feel behind the wheel.

If you are undecided, test drive both.

Pay attention to visibility, seating comfort, ease of parking, cabin space and how easy it is to get in and out. Check the boot and rear seats as well, especially if you regularly carry passengers or larger items.

You might discover that the vehicle you expected to prefer is not actually the one that feels right.

SUV or hatchback?

There is no single answer that works for everyone.

An SUV may suit you if you value additional passenger and cargo space, a higher seating position and greater versatility.

A hatchback may suit you if you want something compact, practical and easy to manoeuvre for everyday driving.

Ultimately, the best choice is the vehicle that fits your routine, budget and needs, rather than simply following what is popular.
