To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the E30 M3, BMW and Lego have unveiled a new collaborative effort that blends touring car heritage with brick-built fun.

The two companies have jointly developed a special edition Speed Champions BMW M3 E30 set, marking the first time BMW and Lego designers have co-created a custom livery for both a scale model and a full-size vehicle.

The motorsport-inspired design draws from BMW M’s racing heritage and will feature not only on the 358-piece Lego model, but also on a genuine E30 M3 show car that will accompany the launch of the brick car.

This newest Speed Champion recreates many of the original E30 M3’s details, including its box-flared bodywork, kidney grille, rear spoiler and four-round-headlight front fascia.

The finished model measures 17cm long and 7cm wide, there are functional wheels and the minifigure driver is wearing a BMW M-branded T-shirt. If you like the look, BMW will flog a human sized version of the minifigure’s T-shirt design in its stores from August.

The Lego release forms part of ongoing celebrations surrounding the original BMW E30 M3. Check out the latest issue of NZ Autocar magazine, where you’ll find our drive story of a NZ-new E30 M3.

The Lego M3 goes on sale August 1.
