BMW adds Alexa AI to iX3 so you can play ‘I Spy’ when you’re lonely

BMW is preparing to take in-car voice control to a new level, announcing plans to roll out an upgraded version of its Intelligent Personal Assistant from 2026, built on Amazon’s new Alexa+ AI architecture.
The German brand says it will be the first car manufacturer to integrate the Alexa+ technology into production vehicles, with the system debuting in the BMW iX3. The enhanced assistant is designed to enable more natural, conversational interaction between occupants and the vehicle.
Apparently the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant allows users to speak freely and ask multiple questions in a single prompt. Drivers and passengers will be able to combine requests about vehicle functions with general knowledge queries, mimicking a more human-style conversation.
BMW says the assistant will also be able to understand follow-up questions and context. For example, a user could ask about a famous artwork and where it is displayed, then immediately request navigation to that location. The system can link information it provides directly to vehicle features such as the navigation system, responding intuitively without the need for repeated commands.
The updated assistant is powered by a large language model (LLM), a form of generative AI capable of understanding complex language and producing its own responses. Over time, BMW says the assistant will learn from interactions, enabling it to respond more precisely and anticipate user intent during future conversations.
Integration with an Amazon account will also allow easier access to streamed music, public news, and a wide range of other content already familiar to Alexa users. And, we suspect, mine users for yet more personal data. BMW describes the move as a major step forward in adding real-world value to its digital services.
“Our partnership with Amazon is based on a shared vision of technological excellence,” said Stephan Durach, BMW Group senior vice president for digital services, infotainment and connected company development. “This has resulted in a product that sets new standards in the naturalness of human-vehicle interaction through the use of artificial intelligence. With the addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ technology, the vehicle becomes an intelligent companion for its users.”
Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Echo, said BMW had played a key role in bringing the technology to market. “BMW Group has been fantastic to work with as we introduce the first implementation of the new Alexa Custom Assistant. BMW’s advanced technology, combined with the intelligence and conversational capabilities of Alexa+, creates a truly sophisticated in-vehicle experience.”
The AI-enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will be unveiled publicly for the first time at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. Initial availability is planned for Germany and the United States, with BMW iX3 customers in those markets expected to be the first to gain access from the second half of 2026. BMW says other models and regions will follow gradually.
In the iX3, the system will be integrated into BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive interface, running on BMW Operating System X. The rollout forms part of BMW’s broader move toward software-defined vehicles, with the aim of more closely integrating cars into customers’ wider digital ecosystems.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been a core element of the brand’s iDrive system since 2018. Previous updates have expanded its capabilities to include faster responses, broader information access, and services such as music search, news, sports, and general knowledge.
