CarPoint turns Porsche 944 into GT-K44 shooting brake

German Porsche specialist CarPoint has unveiled the GT-K44, a bespoke shooting brake based on the 944, with conversion pricing starting at €119,000. Oh, and that’s the conversion, buyers supply the donor car separately.

The project takes inspiration from a Porsche 924 Turbo wagon created by Günter Artz in the 1980s. CarPoint founder Andreas Freund once drove one and has now worked with designer Michael Söhngen to reinterpret the idea using a 944.

Creating the new silhouette involves extensive changes to the roof and rear bodywork. The roofline is raised and extended, while the B-pillars and rear quarter panels are reshaped to accommodate new side glass.

A bespoke tailgate creates a large opening stretching down towards the rear bumper and up into the roof. Revised rear lights, a roof spoiler, rear wiper and roof-mounted aerial complete the exterior treatment.

The first completed car is finished in Oak Green with Pascha-pattern upholstery. A new headlining and rear interior panels accommodate the altered roof and window line, while the original rear bench remains.

Underneath is a Porsche 944 S2, retaining its 3.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing approximately 155kW. CarPoint also recommends the 944 Turbo as a donor, in either 162kW or 184kW form.

Manual and automatic versions are possible, provided the chosen gearbox is already fitted to the donor. CarPoint advises selecting a car with the preferred engine and transmission to simplify the work, and can help source a suitable example.

Further personalisation extends to wheels, tyres, suspension, exhausts, engine upgrades, seats, steering wheels and audio or navigation systems. That gives owners scope to retain a largely original specification or build something more heavily modified.
CarPoint says each car involves several hundred hours of fabrication, bodywork and painting, with handover in Karlsruhe.
“We can’t make it fly, but almost anything else is possible,” says CarPoint.
