Hyundai IONIQ 6 N launches in Australia, NZ decision pending

Words: Richard Edwards

The high-performance EV sedan goes on sale across the Tasman from A$115,000, with a New Zealand launch under review.

Hyundai Australia has launched the IONIQ 6 N, priced from A$115,000 plus on-road costs.

A New Zealand launch has not been confirmed. A Hyundai NZ spokesperson told NZ Autocar: “IONIQ 6 N is under consideration for NZ. A decision will be made in the near future.”

The 6 N is the second model in Hyundai’s high-performance EV line-up, following the IONIQ 5 N, which won NZ Autocar’s Performance Car of the Year award in 2024.

Performance

The dual-motor all-wheel-drive sedan produces 448kW and 740Nm in standard form, rising to 478kW and 770Nm with N Grin Boost engaged. Hyundai claims 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds with N Launch Control activated, and a top speed of 257km/h.

The 84kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of 487km. A 400V/800V multi-charging system supports a 10 to 80 percent recharge in as little as 18 minutes.

The 6 N rides on stroke-sensing electronically controlled dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and 20-inch forged alloys fitted with N-specific Pirelli P Zero 5 tyres. Braking is via 400mm front rotors with four-piston monobloc calipers and 360mm rear rotors.

A motorsport-style swan-neck rear wing produces up to 100kg of downforce. Drag coefficient is 0.274.

Body rigidity has been increased over the standard IONIQ 6 through additional weld points, structural adhesive and rear bulkhead diagonal braces, lifting torsional stiffness by 19.8 percent.

N tech and equipment

The 6 N retains and upgrades the N-specific driver technology introduced on the 5 N, including N e-Shift, N Drift Optimiser, N Launch Control, N Torque Distribution and N Track Manager. N Active Sound+ now offers three audio profiles: Ignition, Evolution and Light Speed.

A new N Battery function provides Drag, Sprint and Endurance modes for track use, with a 7.0kW preconditioning heater that Hyundai claims cuts warm-up time by more than 14 minutes.

Standard equipment on the Australian-spec car includes N lightweight sports seats, an N Pasubio steering wheel with customisable N1/N2 buttons, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment, head-up display, eight-speaker BOSE audio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Hyundai’s full SmartSense ADAS suite.

A sunroof is standard, with a no-cost delete option available. Six exterior colours are offered, including a new Signature Performance Blue Pearl.

NZ Autocar will update this story when Hyundai NZ confirms its plans.
