Porsche’s new petrol-powered supercar concept to debut on Friday

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Porsche will reveal its Mission S supercar concept at 9.30am NZDT on Friday 16 October, offering a first look at a potential new flagship positioned above the 911.

According to European reports, the Mission S could preview a mid-engined successor to the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Porsche chief executive Michael Leiters has outlined plans for a new super sports car platform, with the proposed model expected to use combustion power.

That represents a different direction from the Mission X revealed in 2023. That concept explored an electric flagship, while the Mission S signals renewed interest in a petrol-powered car at the top of Porsche’s sports car range.

Porsche has kept the full design and technical specifications under wraps, although teaser footage shows a rev counter with an 8000rpm redline. The engine’s capacity, cylinder count and output have not been confirmed, so suggestions of a flat-eight remain speculation.

On its preview page, Porsche describes the Mission S as “our tribute to the sports car. And to the vision of Ferry Porsche.” The company also calls its approach “Timeless, minimalist and focused.”

The project forms part of Porsche’s recently announced strategy through to 2035, which places greater emphasis on exclusivity, higher-value models and profitability. Its official announcement confirms development of a mid-engined platform intended to support a model line above the 911.

That wording leaves room for more than a single limited-run flagship, although Porsche has yet to detail what a production range might look like.

The company is continuing to invest across combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. Alongside the supercar project, its plans include electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models, with their first full year of production expected in 2028.
