Škoda Octavia gains full hybrid power with no plug required

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Škoda has announced its first full hybrid, adding a new petrol-electric powertrain to the Octavia hatchback and wagon. Two versions will offer combined outputs of 100kW and 125kW, with the battery charged entirely through driving.

It will soon be on sale in Europe. New Zealand availability is still TBC. The Octavia Wagon currently sold here starts at $59,500 plus on-road costs and uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The new arrangement takes electrification further, allowing the Octavia to drive on battery power alone for up to approximately 2km, depending on throttle application. Its 1.6kWh battery is replenished through regenerative braking or by the petrol engine.

The system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric machines. One generates electricity and starts the engine, while the other drives the front wheels.

A single-speed automatic transmission and clutch allow the petrol engine to drive the wheels directly when that is more efficient.

Around town, at speeds up to approximately 60km/h, the system generally favours series hybrid operation. The electric motor drives the car, with the petrol engine running a generator when required.

At higher speeds and during steady cruising, the clutch can connect the engine mechanically to the front wheels. The electric motor can still lend a hand, with the system choosing its operating mode automatically according to speed, load, gradient and battery charge.

The Octavia can also coast with its engine switched off. Eco and Normal modes favour gentler deceleration, while Sport increases regenerative braking.

Škoda quotes combined WLTP consumption of 4.3L/100km and CO₂ emissions of 97–98g/km, depending on specification.

The new hybrid will be offered in Selection and Sportline trims in Europe. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument display. Both powertrain versions have an electronically limited 180km/h top speed.

There is a practicality trade-off. The hybrid wagon provides 485 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1540 litres with the rear seats folded. That’s 155 litres less with the seats up than the current New Zealand wagon’s 640-litre boot.

The hatchback offers 460 litres, or 1400 litres with its rear seats folded. Neither hybrid body style can be specified with a spare wheel or variable boot floor.
