Skoda owners can now print their own cupholders at home

Words: Richard Edwards

Skoda has released a library of free 3D-printable accessories that owners can download, adapt and print at home.

The range is called Printly Clever, a play on the Simply Clever label Skoda gives its small practical features. It sits on Skoda’s profile at Printables.com, and Skoda says it is the first carmaker to offer accessories through a dedicated platform like this.

The designs come from Skoda’s innovation incubator and its design and engineering teams. Owners pick an item, adjust the file to suit their needs and print it on their own 3D printer. Skoda says this avoids the lead times, tooling and stock holding that come with making accessories the conventional way.

Many of the accessories fit into existing storage spaces without any modification to the car.

So far the range includes cupholders, storage and coin boxes, cable management tools, phone brackets, hooks that clip USB cables and bottle caps into seat-back pockets, and top tether hooks. Most are designed to work across several models, and many sit in existing storage compartments without any modification to the car.

The accessories suit current Skodas and many discontinued models, so owners of older cars aren’t left out.

The new Epiq and Peaq electric SUVs get their own set, including cupholder covers, a jumbo box tray, inserts and holders, and a lower console organiser. There’s also a clip-on cupholder for the Peaq’s folding table that takes both standard and large cups. Skoda says owners asked for these items.

Skoda started the programme after a positive response to the 3D vehicle models it had previously posted on the platform. Comments left on Printables help it decide which designs to develop next. So far the most popular download is the top tether hook.
