Looks may be deceiving as Tesla says the car can seat five adults and two kids in rear-facing seats. It has a full-length glass roof (the luggage lives under the bonnet) and a 17-inch touch-screen display.
Tesla are claiming a 0-60 (100kph) sprint of just 5.5 seconds and a 135mph top speed (217kph).
The top spec S has a range of 300 miles from its floor-mounted, advanced cell technology batteries that take just 45 minutes to quick-charge. There are three battery pack options, offering 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge.
The car will go on sale overseas in 2011, but Tesla expects to only prduce 20,000 per year.
