BMW brings a V8 back to the 7 Series
Words: Andrew Sluys
BMW has announced it will be bringing a V8 engine back to its 7 Series flagship sedan.
The lack of a V8 in the 7 Series was a surprise to us all when the latest iteration debuted, but it’s clear BMW is looking to remedy this with the facelift.

The 2027 BMW M760 xDrive utilises the same S68 V8 as the M5, the X5M, and even the Land Rover Defender Octa.
It’s a 4.4-litre twin-turbo engine, and while BMW is yet to release the full specification sheet for this M760, it should produce around 425kW.
The other big change to this 7 Series is the fact it now wears an ‘M’ badge, whereas the last 760i didn’t get one.
This means the new 7 Series is more performance focused than the last, and wears equipment that reflects this.

It wears a larger front intake, and there’s a small front spoiler visible below the bumper.
On the inside, it’s likely to get a more M-focused cabin than a standard 7 Series, with bolstered seats and red detailing.
Where the 760i used to use a V12 engine, that seems to be reserved exclusively for the Rolls-Royce models in the BMW stable.
It should also be quicker than the V12-equipped 7 Series models of the past, but will likely fall short of the electric i7’s blistering performance.

As for when we’ll see this new V8-equipped 7 Series in New Zealand? Currently BMW just sells the inline-six 740i alongside the i7, so there’s a good chance it will join the line-up.
Deliveries in the US are set to begin in the first half of 2027, so we might see it towards mid-2027 locally.
