Details of first electric BMW M3 revealed, set to launch in 2027

Words: Andrew Sluys

BMW has revealed details of its first proper all-electric M powertrain, which is set to launch with an M3-like performance sedan in 2027.

As part of what BMW is calling the ‘M Neue Klasse’, this electric M3 will be the first offering, and as expected, the numbers sound insane.

Though BMW is yet to label this car as an M3, or reveal a naming convention for Neue Klasse vehicles, it’s likely to be some variant of it, and probably featuring an i.

With an electric motor at each wheel, it is predicted that the electric M3 will produce over 1000hp, or 745kW.

As is the case for all M models, it will have to have the ability to run lap after lap at the track, and BMW has addressed this by taking tech from the iX3, and adapting it for motorsport use.

The battery capacity will be at least 100kWh, and it will feature 800-volt architecture, allowing for rapid recharge times.

As for what it will look like? BMW is keeping that under wraps (quite literally) for the time being, but did provide these images of it sliding about in the snow.

From the limited amount we can see, it looks like BMW is moving away from the controversial oversized kidney grilles on the current M3/M4 pairing.

The overall aesthetic looks similar to what we’ve seen previously on the Neue Klasse concepts, albeit with wider wheel arches, typical of the performance-oriented M models.

“The next generation of models are set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment,” said Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH.

“With the latest generation of Neue Klasse technology, we are taking the BMW M driving experience to a new level and will inspire our customers with outstanding, racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.”
