Inchcape announces end to local KGM distribution

Inchcape is ending its KGM distribution deal in New Zealand, with a final date yet to be confirmed.

The move is described as a joint call, made alongside OEM partner KGM.

“As part of Inchcape’s standard approach to portfolio management, we continuously review our partnerships to ensure we have the right portfolio of brands for our business aligned with our strategic growth objectives,” an Inchcape spokesperson says.

Inchcape says it’s now working alongside KGM to keep the transition smooth, with customers, dealers and partners the priority.

The move comes on the same day Inchcape announced it will be dropping Peugeot distribution in Australia.

Inchcape acquired the brand back in 2023, arriving as SsangYong via the Great Lake Motor Distributors acquisition — a deal that also brought LDV on board. SsangYong became KGM in March 2024.

KGM’s local dealer footprint has been shrinking, with Auckland hit hardest. East Tamaki, Drury and North Shore have all closed, Henderson looks set to follow. This leaves Winger’s Greenlane site as the last KGM sales point standing in the city.

Nationwide, the brand’s locator shows just 10 sales dealers left, plus a service-only outpost in Palmerston North.

Inchcape insists it’s not going anywhere, pointing to a broader portfolio spanning petrol, hybrid and EV passenger cars, SUVs, utes and vans. Existing KGM orders will be honoured, and the brand’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, Assured Service Pricing and Pre-Paid Service Plans stay as they are.

KGM have confirmed the KGM brand will continue in New Zealand and they will provide updates on their local distribution plans in time.
