KGM Torres Hybrid lands in NZ with special introductory pricing

Words: Andrew Sluys

KGM has launched its first hybrid SUV in New Zealand, with the Torres Hybrid now available through local dealerships from $49,990 plus on-roads. The brand says the Torres Hybrid introduces a ‘bold’ new entrant to the midsize SUV market, pairing a ‘rugged design’ with a hybrid system developed in partnership with BYD.

Two variants are available at launch: the standard Torres Hybrid priced from $49,990, and the better-equipped Torres Hybrid Ultimate will be $54,990. No word on how long the introductory pricing lasts, or what the price will be when it ends.

Hybrid system developed with BYD

Under the bonnet sits KGM’s new Dual Tech Hybrid System, co-developed with BYD. The setup combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (220Nm) with dual electric motors (300Nm) for a total system output of 150kW, delivered through an e-DHT hybrid transmission.

KGM says the Torres Hybrid can operate in EV-only, hybrid, or engine-only modes. The company makes a fairly bold statement regarding its EV mode, saying it can ‘drive on battery power alone for up to 94 per cent of the time in urban conditions’. We guess they mean very-slow-moving-traffic conditions. A three-stage regenerative braking system with traffic-adaptive control boosts efficiency, while electric-only operation is possible at speeds up to 100km/h. Combined fuel consumption is quoted at 5.6L/100km, though this is a NEDC test figure.

Unique styling and practical cabin

The Torres Hybrid follows KGM’s “tough-tech” design language, with a squared-off exterior and confident stance clearly aimed at buyers wanting something more ‘distinctive’ than mainstream rivals.

All models get dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and KGM’s new Athena 2.0 interface featuring detailed hybrid energy flow graphics.

Comprehensive safety as standard

Eight airbags and a wide suite of driver-assist features are fitted across the range, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Keep Assist and High Beam Assist. Front and rear parking sensors and heated, auto-folding mirrors are also standard.

Inchcape New Zealand general manager Jerry Delaney says the Torres is designed to offer efficiency and presence in equal measure. “The KGM Torres is a vehicle that turns heads without compromising on function. It’s great for drivers looking to save on fuel without blending into the crowd.”

Warranty and servicing

The Torres Hybrid is covered by a 5-year/100,000km warranty and five years of roadside assistance. KGM recommends servicing every 10,000km or 12 months, carried out through its nationwide dealer network, which has access to factory tools and diagnostic equipment.
