2024 Toyota Hilux Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid Comparison

Words: Henry Williams

Take a look at the comparison below to see if the new 2024 Toyota Hilux Hybrid outperforms its standard diesel counterpart.

For years, the Hilux has held a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders, known for its durability, reliability, and ease of use. The latest Hilux model continues this tradition, maintaining Toyota’s dependable reputation, while introducing a more powerful powertrain, but is it better?

At first look, the SR5 diesel model and the Hybrid appear very similar, with the hybrid version available exclusively in the SR5 trim, which features all the bells and whistles such as alloy wheels, premium entertainment system, keyless entry, daytime running lights and more!

All new for all 2024 Hilux SR5 refinements include the addition of a facelifted front end now including radar cruise control, electric leather seats, USB-C charging ports, a wireless charging pad, 18″ wheels and more!

The Hilux Hybrid introduces a simplified Toyota-tried and tested hybrid drive assembly, bringing enhanced performance thanks to its 48V electrified “mild hybrid” powertrain.

The Hilux Hybrid powertrain will only be available in automatic for now.

The new hybrid drive unit packs the same beefy 500Nm of torque as the standard diesel, but the hybrid cuts fuel consumption by an estimated 10% and reduces emissions. The biggest benefit is the ability to increase response under acceleration while cutting fuel costs. This is especially noticeable on those short drives or at slow speeds. Perfect for pavement pounders and crawling off-road alike.

Initially, the Hilux Hybrid commands a higher price of $65,490, compared to the $63,390 of the standard diesel, reflecting its advanced technology. However, the potential savings on fuel, combined with the growing importance of sustainable living in New Zealand, might justify the extra investment for many.
