“Don’t know what else they want me to do,” Lawson opens up about F1 future

Words: Andrew Sluys

Liam Lawson has opened up about his uncertain future with the Racing Bulls Formula 1 team during an interview ahead of this weekend’s Grand Prix.

Despite amassing an impressive 83 points throughout the 2026 season, it seems Lawson is unsure of his position going forward with the team.

“I don’t know. I mean every weekend I’ve been trying to do my best,” he said.

“I feel like we’ve had a really strong year and we’re in a good position. We’re fighting Alpine.”

“I don’t know what else they want me to do. But yeah, it’s just one of those things at the moment.”

Lawson also mentioned how the timing of the decision will leave him with few options if it doesn’t go his way.

“I mean it’s tough isn’t it? It’s the end of the season. When something like this is pushed all the way to the end, you’re left with not really any options,” he said.

“So it’s not the easiest situation. Obviously I want to be racing Formula 1, and I’m trying to show my best every weekend. And I feel like we’ve had a good year.”

Racing Bulls is yet to confirm a contract extension for either of its current drivers, leaving both seats open for the 2027 season.

While Lawson has had a great stretch of scoring points throughout the last five races, and sits at ninth in the driver’s standings, his teammate Arvid Lindblad hasn’t managed to do the same.

Despite this, it feels like Lawson is facing more pressure to retain his seat, given Racing Bulls’ reputation of progressing young drivers through their system.

Speaking at the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Lawson sounded excited to get out there and prove himself again.

“I’m excited. I feel like the speed’s been good, and in Mexico it was very very good,” he said.

“We qualified very well, I just had the penalty and had to start from the pit lane. But I think outside of that we were quick all weekend. The race pace was good. We were able to come through.”

It remains unclear as to when Racing Bulls will make a decision regarding its driver line-up for the 2027 season, but it should be imminent.
