BMW’s new safety tech can stop doors opening into cyclists

BMW is introducing an active door-opening delay that can temporarily prevent occupants from opening a door into the path of an approaching cyclist.

The enhanced Exit Warning system forms part of an expanded collection of active safety features launching with BMW’s Neue Klasse generation. The new iX3 is the first production model to receive the technology, with the forthcoming BMW i3, X5 and 7 Series set to follow.

BMW has offered conventional exit warnings on several models for years, using visual and audible alerts when another road user is approaching from behind. The new version goes a step further by actively delaying the electronic door lock.

Side-mounted radar sensors monitor the area around the parked vehicle for approaching cars, bicycles and other road users. If the system detects a likely collision, it delays the door’s release until the danger has passed.

It’s intended to reduce so-called dooring accidents, where a parked vehicle’s door is opened into the path of a cyclist. These incidents can be especially dangerous when the cyclist is thrown into an adjacent traffic lane.

BMW says its latest active safety systems will be fitted as standard across multiple model ranges, rather than being restricted to optional driver-assistance packages.

We bring drivers and assistance systems together into a cooperative system that works in harmony. At BMW, active safety functions operate as quiet, intelligent companions in the background, discreet yet highly effective when it matters most in critical situations,” says Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience Development at the BMW Group.

Central to the new generation is BMW Symbiotic Drive, which attempts to determine whether a driver is deliberately performing a manoeuvre before intervening.

The system considers the use of the indicators, steering inputs and whether the driver has performed a shoulder check. If it decides a lane departure is intentional and there’s no immediate danger, it stays out of the way. Warnings or steering assistance are provided when the departure appears unintentional or a collision is likely.

BMW has also developed an emergency steering function that can automatically guide the car around an obstacle while keeping it within its lane. Scenarios might include a pedestrian stepping onto the road from behind a stopped vehicle or a cyclist going unnoticed in poor light.

The same technology can move the vehicle away from an impending side impact, provided the sensors determine that sufficient space is available. BMW’s Emergency Brake Assistant can meanwhile apply full braking and provide evasive steering support to avoid head-on collisions, animals and wildlife.

A driver-monitoring camera can intervene during a suspected medical emergency. If the driver is no longer responding, the vehicle can take control, activate its hazard lights, make an emergency call and bring itself to a controlled stop. The driver can override the system at any time.

Parking protection has also been expanded. Active Park Distance Control now uses ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras to brake for objects at the sides of the vehicle as well as those behind it.

Rear cross-traffic braking is designed to prevent collisions when reversing from parking spaces with restricted visibility, particularly where cyclists may be passing behind the vehicle.

There’s also a system intended to catch accelerator and brake pedal mix-ups. If the car detects an obstacle less than one metre away, a speed below 2km/h and an unusually forceful press of the accelerator, it can override the input and bring the vehicle to a stop.

Information from these systems is presented through BMW’s Panoramic iDrive technology. Depending on the model’s equipment, warnings and detected objects can appear on the central touchscreen, Panoramic Vision display or 3D head-up display.

The functions are managed by a new water-cooled central computer BMW calls the “Superbrain of Automated Driving”. It has approximately 20 times the processing power of the company’s previous system and controls the active safety, automated driving and parking technology.

BMW says analysis of 1.3 million customer-consented vehicles in Europe recorded 1.6 billion kilometres of travel during one month. Drivers received around eight million potential-collision warnings, while the assistance systems made 243,977 steering or braking interventions.

The new iX3 has received five-star ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP under the revised 2026 testing protocols, becoming one of the first vehicles assessed against the updated criteria.
