BYD NZ has confirmed its Seal 6 Touring will be landing here in about two months time. BYD will be hoping its presence will help revive the station wagon market here in New Zealand, which is all but dead really. There’s a bit of life in the premium wagon segment, but it’s slim pickings in the mass market, the Skoda Superb being the only offering.
How much is the BYD Seal 6 Touring in New Zealand?
You’ll have to wait for those details, pricing and final specifications will be announced soon. Though we know there will be two models offered; Essential and Premium.
While it wears the Seal name, it’s not to be confused with the Seal sedan, which is pure electric. With the 6 in its model name, that means it is a ‘super hybrid’ with a 1.5 petrol engine working with a battery.
The Seal 6 Touring 4.8m long, has a 500L boot and uses BYD’s DM-i super hybrid technology. That sees it using a 1.5-litre engine (primarily to turn a generator to make power for the battery) and a 19kWh battery (though the Essential is likely to use a 10.1kWh unit) and electric motor driving the front wheels. In the UK, the Seal 6 Touring makes a combined 155kW with a range of 105km for the 19kWh battery model.
