GWM has confirmed that its expanding hybrid off-road line-up will grow again in 2026, with the Tank 300 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid locked in for New Zealand. The electrified version of the off-roader is set to arrive in Q1 2026, giving Kiwi buyers a new option that blends EV running with genuine low-range capability.

Previewed at GWM Tech Day in October, the Tank 300 Hi4-T uses the same Hi4-T hybrid architecture already seen in the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha. GWM says the new model represents the next step in its push to deliver electrified powertrains without watering down the rugged performance that has made the brand’s 4x4s so successful locally.

Hybrid power, real 4×4 foundations
Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid petrol engine paired with a 9-speed hybrid automatic (9HAT), delivering what the brand describes as strong low-down torque and smoother on-road manners. The Tank 300 Hi4-T retains a proper mechanical 4WD system with a low-range transfer case and locking diffs.

The hybrid setup allows the SUV to switch between electric-only, hybrid and petrol modes, depending on conditions. GWM says the system provides better fuel economy in everyday driving while offering precise torque control when tackling mud, rocks, climbs or sand.
Towing capability has also been maintained, with the Hi4-T rated to haul up to 3000kg braked. The model also includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to run tools, appliances or camping gear straight from the vehicle’s onboard power supply.

Local details coming in 2026
The addition of the plug-in hybrid powertrain means GWM will soon offer petrol, diesel, hybrid and PHEV options across its New Zealand line-up. Full specs and pricing for the Tank 300 Hi4-T will be announced closer to launch, with expressions of interest now open through GWM New Zealand. The Tank 300 Hi4-T arrives in early 2026.
