GWM’s Tank brand passes one million sales

Words: Richard Edwards

GWM’s Tank brand has just ticked over one million sales worldwide, and it’s taken less than six years to get there.

The milestone was announced on 1 November, almost six years after the first Tank 300 went on sale in China. Back then it wasn’t even a brand of its own. The boxy, retro-styled Tank 300 was launched under GWM’s WEY badge, making its debut at the Chengdu motor show in July 2020 before going on sale that December. GWM liked what it saw and spun Tank off as its fifth brand at the Shanghai motor show in April 2021, alongside Haval, WEY, Ora and its pickups.

The family has grown since then. There’s now a Tank 300, 400, 500 and 700, with GWM’s Hi4-T and Hi4-Z hybrid systems among the powertrain options. The Tank 500 was the first to get the Hi4-T plug-in hybrid, with the Tank 400 following in September 2023.

Tank started selling outside China in July 2022 and landed in Australia that December. You’ll now find it in more than 30 countries and regions, with Australia, Mexico, the Middle East, South-East Asia and South Africa its biggest export markets.

Kiwis can choose between the Tank 300 and the larger seven-seat Tank 500, and we’ve spent plenty of time in both, from the Tank 300 Lux Hybrid to the Tank 500 Ultra. The Tank 300 range picked up a Hi4-T plug-in hybrid in April, while the Tank 500 is one of the models getting GWM’s new 3.0-litre turbo diesel.

GWM is marking the occasion with a “One in a Million” campaign, though the party comes in a quieter year for the brand. Tank sold 234,442 vehicles worldwide in 2025, but October’s 15,389 sales were down 31% on the same month last year, its seventh monthly drop in a row. Its January to October tally of 158,185 is down 15.6%, according to our sister site Inside China Auto.
