Is Nissan about to announce a plug-in ute for NZ?

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Nissan will announce an electrified addition to its New Zealand range on Thursday 8 October, with the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute looking like a likely candidate.

The brand hasn’t named the model. Its teaser promises “electrified performance and new levels of capability” in a key market segment, adding that the vehicle has been extensively tested and tuned for regional conditions.

That description fits the Frontier Pro, which has been undergoing testing in Australia and has already been shown privately to dealers from both Australia and New Zealand.

Nissan Oceania managing director Andrew Humberstone also hinted at an electrified ute for New Zealand during an interview in March. Taken together, those developments make the Frontier Pro the most likely contender.

A camouflaged prototype was photographed in Kirrawee, in Sydney’s south, wearing New South Wales registration plates. Test vehicles have also appeared in Victoria, with the first known Australian prototype arriving in Melbourne in June 2026.

The Frontier Pro was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show in April 2025 as Nissan’s first global plug-in hybrid model.

Despite the Nissan badge, it isn’t based on the Navara. It uses the Z9 platform developed by Dongfeng, Nissan’s joint-venture partner in China.

Its powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. Nissan has previously quoted combined outputs of 300kW and 800Nm for Australia, although New Zealand specifications remain unconfirmed.

A 33kWh battery provides a claimed 135km of electric driving under China’s CLTC testing regime.

Previously quoted capability includes 3500kg of braked towing, a 700mm wading depth and an electromechanical rear differential lock. Vehicle-to-load functionality can supply up to 6kW for tools, appliances or camping equipment.

The regional development programme is understood to include calibration of driver-assistance systems, with local suspension tuning also possible.

Chinese-market cabin equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument display and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen. A panoramic roof and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats are also available, but their inclusion in a potential New Zealand model hasn’t been confirmed.

Earlier testing and dealer previews had raised the prospect of a 2027 launch. Nissan’s latest teaser doesn’t give pricing or delivery timing, but says Thursday’s announcement will provide the first details of the unnamed model’s arrival in New Zealand.
