New electric ID. Tiguan coming to NZ next year
Words: Kyle Cassidy
Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Tiguan, a battery electric SUV planned for introduction in 2027 that will sit alongside the existing petrol-powered Tiguan range.
VW NZ says the ‘familiar name’ is significant for New Zealand, where Tiguan remains Volkswagen’s best-selling passenger vehicle. The electric version will add another powertrain choice, while the current Tiguan continues with traditional powertrain options. The ID. Tiguan is a major update of the ID. 4, which will be discontinued.

One of the more practical changes is inside. Volkswagen says the ID. Tiguan’s redesigned cabin brings more physical controls for key functions, alongside updated technology and a focus on ease of use.

The company also promises generous interior space and everyday practicality, with the smooth performance and instant torque delivery associated with an electric drivetrain. Detailed powertrain specifications are still to come.

Volkswagen New Zealand general manager Chanelle McDonald says the new model extends a nameplate that has built a strong local following.

“As our best-selling vehicle locally, Tiguan has earned a strong reputation with Kiwi customers over many years. The introduction of ID. Tiguan is significant because it extends that success into the electric vehicle space, giving customers another way to experience the qualities they know and value from Volkswagen SUVs while embracing the latest generation of electric mobility.”

Globally, more than 8.3 million Tiguans have been produced, making it Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle worldwide. Adding the name to an electric SUV carries that recognition into the brand’s expanding battery electric line-up.
For Kiwi buyers, the remaining questions are around the local specification and price. Volkswagen will announce those details, along with more precise New Zealand launch timing, closer to the ID. Tiguan’s planned arrival.
