Pricing revealed for BMW M5 Sedan

The latest iteration of the BMW M5 Sedan we previewed recently. Now we know it will launch here in Q4 this year, and the price kicks off at $244,900.

Pleasing profile shows off new charging port.

Into its seventh generation, this is the first M5 in its 40-year history with an electrified drivetrain.

Total system output of 535kW and 1000Nm derives mainly from a 4.4-litre V8 turbopetrol that kicks out 430kW and 750Nm. The motor – integrated into the transmission – chips in with 145kW and 280Nm, though a pre-gearing stage effectively increases this to 450Nm.

Power transfers to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and there’s an electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear to help ground the output. Evidently it can jet to 100km/h in 3.5sec, on the way to a top speed of 305km/h thanks to the standard fit M Driver’s Package.

The sports exhaust system features flaps to provide a sonorous note via the quartet of tailpipes. There are also tailored electric sounds for the all-electric mode.

Without the engine going, the M5 can hit 140km/h, while the 18.6kWh battery gives an electric driving range of almost 70km (WLTP).

Chassis dynamics are tuned to engage and consist of a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle. There’s also adaptive M suspension, the electronically-controlled dampers optimising ride and handling. 

The interior features the latest iDrive system, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar and ambient lighting. A control panel on the centre console houses buttons that allow the driver to tailor the driving experience. There are various M Hybrid modes too. These sharpen the combustion engine, electric motor and system cooling to optimise racetrack potential.

There’s also a Boost mode for bursts of added acceleration.

Standard kit includes 20”/21” M light alloy wheels, M Drive Professional, Adaptive Suspension and M Sport Differential. Expect an automatic tailgate and comfort access, M Compound brakes, seat and wheel heating, and M Multifunction seats with ventilation. There are also charging cables, four zones of AC, adaptive LED headlights, wireless charging and an 18-speaker B&W sound system. M Carbon Ceramic Brakes are a $19,000 option.

Production of the all-new BMW M5 has now started at BMW’s Dingolfing plant.
