New Zealand specifications revealed for Chery’s diesel hybrid Stockman ute

Words: Andrew Sluys

Chery New Zealand has published all the details (minus pricing) of the new Stockman ute to its website.

Starting on the outside, the Stockman measures 5,450mm long, 2,010mm wide, and 1,890mm high. At this size, it will be closer to the likes of the MGU9 and LDV Terron 9 than a traditional Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux.

It sits on a wheelbase measuring 3,250mm long, and features a tray that’s 1,560mm long and 1,560mm wide.

Beneath the bonnet, it uses a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine that’s paired with a plug-in hybrid system. The combined outputs of this system sit at 350kW and 800Nm.

It can also cover up to 100km (NEDC) on electric power alone, and although battery size is yet to be confirmed, it is likely to be a 34kWh unit.

Chery claims a combined fuel economy for this system of just 2L/100km.

It’s unclear as to whether or not the Stockman will use a dedicated hybrid transmission in place of a traditional automatic.

Either way, it will get a four-wheel drive system paired with a low-range transfer case for off-road duties.

The Stockman matches the segment standard for towing with a 3.5-tonne braked maximum, and a 750kg unbraked rating.

It features three locking differentials (front, centre and rear), and gets double wishbone suspension up front, with leaf springs on the rear.

There’s also a bunch of off-road assistance modes such as crawl control, and tight-turn assist for off-road maneuvers.

Wheel size is also yet to be confirmed, but all signs point to it sitting on 17-inch wheels. These will be wrapped in all-terrain tyres as standard.

On the inside, it features a combination of suede and leather. There are heated seats in both rows, while the front seats also get a cooling function.

There’s also wireless smart phone charging, and a “premium” sound system.

Details around the Stockman’s pricing are yet to be revealed alongside any word on when it will be launched locally.

The website simply states “soon” in reference to a New Zealand launch.
