Denza Z unveiled as another BYD electric supercar with more than 1100kW

Denza, a subsidiary of BYD, has pulled the covers off the Z, which is an electric supercar with mind-bending performance. 

Not to be confused with the Yangwang U9, the Denza Z is more of a traditional-looking car that happens to pack a lot of grunt. 

Where the U9 is unapologetically a supercar, the Z is a four-seat coupe that rivals the Koenigsegg Gemera. 

The Z gets a powertrain comprised of three electric motors, that produces a hefty 1164kW and 1241Nm of torque. 

This is sent to all four wheels, and it is able to hit 100km/h from a standing start in a blistering 2.25-seconds. 

It is powered by a 76kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery, which should provide a driving range of around 400km. 

The 1500kW DC charging rate provided by BYD’s flash charging system will reportedly replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in just 9 minutes. 

Instead of a traditional hydraulic steering system it features a completely electric one, meaning there isn’t a mechanical connection between. 

It will use magnetorheological dampers, which are connected to external sensors to prepare the Z for upcoming road conditions. 

While the concept was shown off earlier in the year at the Beijing Auto Show, the production version featured at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. 

It took centre stage at BYD’s display during the event, as it will soon become Denza’s flagship offering in the UK.

In that part of the world, the Z starts from £142,900 ($330,000 NZD) for the Coupe and £159,900 ($369,000 NZD) for the Spider.

While this is a fair chunk of change, you’d have to spend a significant amount more to get a vehicle from a legacy manufacturer with the same performance. 

If this isn’t hardcore enough for you, Denza has also revealed plans of a race-prepped version of this Z supercar. 

Instead of air suspension, this race version will ride on steel coils, but use the same carbon ceramic brake rotors. 

Though the Z will be produced in right-hand drive for the United Kingdom, availability in our part of the world remains unclear. 

BYD has confirmed the Denza Z9 GT will launch here later this year, which gives us hope for this Z.
