A group of brand new Renault Capturs was recently spotted for sale through a number of New Zealand used car dealerships.
First covered by CarExpert, the group of small French SUVs wouldn’t normally be out of place in New Zealand, other than the fact Renault hasn’t sold passenger cars here for quite some time.
The Capturs in question are all 2026 model year examples, with some having covered just delivery mileage.
Only adding to the mystery is that none of the dealerships that are selling these small SUVs were affiliated with Renault when it was selling cars in New Zealand.
To solve this mystery, NZ Autocar reached out to a Matthew Wales, the Dealer Principal at the Andrew Simms Group.
“The vehicles are fresh imports from Japan, there is a little bit of zero millage stock that goes through the auction up there,” Wales said.
“Our Manukau team along with some other dealers have taken advantage of the opportunity for what is a good value, basically new hybrid.”
All 16 of the 2026 Capturs for sale in New Zealand are currently listed on Autotrader, priced from $32,900.
It is powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre engine producing 116kW and 240Nm. This is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
The Captur is available to Australian buyers in the form of the re-badged Mitsubishi ASX.
Mitsubishi New Zealand is yet to replace the current ASX, which has been on sale locally for more than a decade.
Despite its age, the ASX remains one of New Zealand’s best-selling passenger vehicles, priced from $28,990.
