F1: Lawson completes career-best drive in Mexico, extends points streak
Words: Andrew Sluys
Kimi Antonelli has secured his first F1 Driver’s Championship at the Mexico Grand Prix, finishing third.
At just 20 years old, he has also become the youngest driver to claim the title, taking it from Sebastian Vettel, who won it at 23.

“Thank you so much, we did it. We did it, thank you so much, thank you,” a tearful Antonelli said on team radio.
“I would not be here, without Mercedes and my family, I am speechless just trying to process this,” he said after the race.
“It has been an incredible season.”
Max Verstappen claimed another victory in Mexico, and Lewis Hamilton celebrated from the second step as the race concluded.
Further down the pack Liam Lawson managed yet another top-ten finish, which extends his streak of scoring points.

Considering he started from the pit lane, Lawson completed one of the best drives of his career, finishing in the race in ninth-position.
Following the race, his position was upgraded not one, but two times, due to Oscar Piastri and Franco Colapinto receiving penalties.
His points finish puts him 41 points clear of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, to maintain ninth position in the Driver’s Championship.
It also brings Lawson closer to former teamate Isack Hadjar, who ended up at P9 after the post-race proceedings.
Fellow Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad had less luck on his side as a collision with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri forced a late race retirement.
