Mercedes and its AMG engineers recruited former McLaren F1 ace Mika Häkkinen and race driver Klaus Ludwig to fine-tune the new E63, and the its host of improvements make it a real performer.
It’s 6.2-litre V8 engine is borrowed from the SL63 AMG, and power has been increased by 11bhp to 518 (386kW) and 465lb of torque.
The car will hit 100kph in 4.5 seconds – top speed is limited to 250kph.
Transmission is a Speedshift seven-speed unit, which is said to improve the E63’s efficiency by 12% to 22.4mpg.
The new electronically suspension system, called AMG Ride Control, allows drivers to vary the damping and level of body roll at the push of a button. Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes are offered, and these work in conjunction with an updated power steering system and three-stage stability system.
Handling is improved with a 56mm wider front track and unique steering ratio compared to the regular E-Class, plus MacPherson strut and multi-link active suspension.
Highlights of the exterior include 17mm wider fenders, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights, and 18in wheels standard.
The new E-Class coupe will hit showrooms in Europe on 9 May 2009.
