The Suzuki GSX-R has often set the superbike standards, especially during Summer Racing series in New Zealand. Now Suzuki is marking four decades of the GSX-R brand with a special edition.

I am old enough to remember seeing the first examples of the GSX-R 750 racing at Pukekohe.

Known as the 40th anniversary GSX-R1000, it continues the long line of IL4 litre superbikes, renowned for their performance, reliability, and top riding experience.

But I've not had the pleasure of riding one on track, unfortunately.

The GSX-R1000R 40th Anniversary is further enhanced with additional electronic control systems. These “empower riders to push their limits with confidence and precision, along with complying with the latest emissions and noise regulations.”

Looks like swell fun here.

The GSX-R1000 comes fully equipped for street riding, but quickly transforms for closed-course action after removing the mirrors, rego plate and such like.

This is one of the three colour schemes available.

The anniversary edition is available in three colour schemes inspired by legendary past liveries. Only the yellow version is not shown here. They also come with the GSX-R emblem on the seat and muffler, reminding of its heritage. For more info, see below.

The screaming heart of the matter.

Deliveries begin in Q3, 2026.
