Audi has offered the first detailed look inside its upcoming Q9 flagship SUV, revealing a luxury-focused interior designed to prioritise comfort, technology and space ahead of the model’s official debut in July.

Set to become Audi’s first full-size SUV, the new Audi Q9 will sit at the top of the brand’s SUV line-up and introduce several firsts for the marque, including electrically operated doors and a new panoramic roof system with adjustable transparency.

Audi says the Q9 has been developed as a “mobile living space”, with a strong focus on long-distance comfort for families and business users alike.

Gernot Döllner, Audi CEO, says the new model represents a shift in how the company defines its premium experience.

“With the Q9, ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ is increasingly defined by the in-car experience,” says Döllner.

“Cars have long been much more than just a means of transportation; they are mobile living spaces for our customers. Premium materials, variable seating with individual electric seats in the second row, and automatic doors underscore the commitment to quality in our new, large full-size SUV.”

For New Zealand, Audi believes the Q9 will target buyers looking for greater practicality and luxury without sacrificing technology or design.

Greg Leet, General Manager of Audi New Zealand, says the new flagship will broaden the appeal of the brand locally.

“The new Q9 represents a compelling new choice at the top end of the SUV market. It delivers the space, comfort and premium technology that families and active lifestyles increasingly demand, while staying true to Audi’s focus on progressive design and innovation. The Q9 will invite more customers into the Audi experience through a vehicle that delivers on needs without compromise.”

The Audi Q9 will be offered in both six-seat and seven-seat configurations. The optional six-seat layout replaces the second-row bench with two electrically adjustable captain’s chairs featuring active ventilation, while the seven-seat version allows all three second-row seats to accommodate child seats.

Audi says access to the third row has also been prioritised, with individually folding rear seatbacks and electrically powered controls designed to improve practicality.

A talking point is the introduction of fully electric doors, a first for an Audi production vehicle. The system allows the doors to be opened and closed using the key, the myAudi app, the infotainment system, the brake pedal or even the seatbelt buckle. Sensors can also detect obstacles or approaching cyclists to prevent the doors opening into hazards.

Inside, Audi has focused heavily on creating a more open and relaxing cabin environment. A panoramic glass roof measuring approximately 1.5 square metres comes standard and features switchable transparency technology, allowing sections of the roof to turn opaque at the touch of a button.

Higher-grade models also introduce illuminated roof lighting with 84 LEDs capable of displaying 30 different ambient colours.

Technology features prominently throughout the cabin, including Audi’s latest Bang & Olufsen 4D audio system. The setup combines headrest-mounted speakers with seat-mounted actuators that allow occupants to physically feel bass and sound effects through the seats themselves.

The ambient lighting system can also synchronise with music playback, changing colours to match album artwork and rhythm.

Audi says material quality has also been elevated, with new trim options including alpaca wool blends, Dinamica microfibre, fine Nappa leather and a choice of natural wood or carbon-fibre finishes.

Practicality remains a key focus despite the luxury positioning. The redesigned centre console includes dual wireless smartphone chargers and high-output USB-C ports, while the luggage compartment gains a new aluminium rail system for securing cargo.

Audi will officially unveil the Q9 in full on July 29, when additional details including powertrains and performance specifications are expected to be confirmed.
