BMW will offer the all-wheel-drive M2 in NZ, bringing xDrive system to its smallest M car for the first time. Set to arrive in New Zealand in late 2026, the new BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive promises more traction and quicker acceleration while retaining the rear-biased driving dynamics.
Power continues to come from BMW M’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine, but the addition of all-wheel drive helps ground more of its potential. The S58 engine produces 353kW and 600Nm, with power delivered through an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.
BMW claims the M2 M xDrive can sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds.
While all-wheel drive may concern traditionalists, BMW says the system has been tuned to preserve the M2’s playful character. Under normal driving conditions, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, with the front axle only called into action when additional grip is required.
The system works alongside the Active M Differential, Dynamic Stability Control and M-specific traction control systems to optimise grip and agility in varying conditions.
Drivers will also be able to adjust the behaviour of the M xDrive system through the vehicle’s configurable M Setup menu.
New ignition technology debuts
The all-wheel-drive M2 will also introduce a new piece of BMW engine technology known as M Ignite.
Developed to improve efficiency and help future-proof BMW’s performance models against increasingly strict emissions regulations, the patented system uses a pre-chamber ignition process alongside the traditional spark plug arrangement.
A secondary combustion chamber generates flame jets that ignite the fuel-air mixture at multiple points within the cylinder, accelerating combustion and reducing the risk of engine knock under high-load conditions.

BMW says the technology improves efficiency during sustained performance driving while helping maintain power output and reducing fuel consumption.
The new ignition system is supported by a higher compression ratio and revised turbochargers featuring variable turbine geometry, both designed to improve engine responsiveness and reduce turbo lag.
BMW has confirmed M Ignite technology will also be rolled out across other high-performance models sold in New Zealand, including selected versions of the M3 Sedan, M3 Touring and M4 Coupé.
BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive Pricing announced
The BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive will be priced from $154,900, including GST, representing a $5,000 premium over the existing rear-wheel-drive model.
Standard equipment includes Adaptive M suspension, M Compound brakes, M Drive Professional and M Sport seats.
Production will begin at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico in August 2026, with the first customer deliveries in New Zealand expected before the end of the year.
