Chery firms up Stockman specifications and pushes Australian deliveries to February

Words: Richard Edwards

Chery has released a full indicative specification sheet for the Stockman ute, filling in the numbers that were missing when the New Zealand website went live in July, and pushing the first Australian deliveries out to February 1, 2027.

The sheet covers the Model Year 2027 Stockman Ultimate AWD sold in Australia, and it is the specification New Zealand can expect to see. The later Australian date changes nothing here, where Chery had already told us the ute would not arrive until the first quarter of 2027. New Zealand pricing is still to be confirmed.

The powertrain is as previously announced: a 2.5-litre turbo diesel paired with a plug-in hybrid system for a combined 350kW and 800Nm. The sheet now puts the engine alone at 140kW and 450Nm, confirms the 34kWh lithium iron phosphate battery sits under the cargo tub, and names the transmission as a dedicated hybrid unit Chery calls the 4DHT.

Electric range is 96km on the WLTC cycle on the standard all-terrain tyres, against the 100km NEDC figure quoted earlier. Combined fuel consumption is 1.1L/100km with CO2 at 30g/km, and electric energy consumption is 311Wh/km. The fuel tank holds 80 litres.

Charging is 6.6kW AC through a Type 2 port and 70kW DC through CCS2, with the port on the driver’s side rear.

Towing is 3,495kg braked and 750kg unbraked, with a 350kg towball download. Kerb mass is 2,735kg against a 3,500kg gross vehicle mass, giving a payload of 765kg. Gross combination mass is 6,500kg. Chery has said a diesel-only version is under consideration as one way of lifting payload.

Off-road hardware includes front, centre and rear differential locks, 4H and 4L, crawl control, turn assist and an expert mode, with snow, mud, sand and rock settings on top of the eco, normal and sport drive modes. Ground clearance is 247mm, the approach angle is 30 degrees and departure is 25 degrees. Suspension is double wishbone at the front and leaf spring at the rear, tuned locally with Premcar.

Wheels are 17-inch alloys on 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres, with a full-size alloy spare.

The body measures 5,450mm long, 2,010mm wide and 1,890mm high on a 3,250mm wheelbase. The tub is 1,560mm long and wide, 1,220mm between the wheel arches and 505mm deep, and gets side steps, rear tub steps, roof rails and a power tailgate release.

Inside there is a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, a 14-speaker audio system, built-in navigation and wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Seats are synthetic leather, with an eight-way power driver’s seat with memory, a four-way power passenger seat, heating and ventilation up front, a heated steering wheel, and a rear bench that slides and reclines. There are two 230V outlets, a 12V outlet, wireless phone charging, four USB-A and three USB-C ports, a digital rear-view mirror and dual-zone climate control.

Driver assistance runs to autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane centring, blind spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic assist, door opening warning, a driver monitoring system, a 360-degree camera with a see-through chassis view, and six parking sensors at each end. There are seven airbags including a front centre bag.

Four colours are listed: Serpentine, Sandstone, White Opal and Obsidian, with the last three at extra cost.

The Stockman is Chery’s first ute, named by public vote in June, and Chery’s design boss has told us its friendly front end was deliberate. A petrol plug-in hybrid version follows in 2027.
