Chery grille with black back ground

Chery KP31 ute to offer plug-in diesel power in NZ

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Chery has unveiled its new KP31 ute concept in Australia, offering a first look at a production model due to arrive in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Revealed at the brand’s recent hybrid showcase in Sydney, the KP31 is set to break new ground as the world’s first dual-cab ute powered by a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain.

Chery has confirmed the ute will make its way to NZ too, with timing TBC at this point.

An interesting point for our market; would it be charged RUCs at a diesel or PHEV rate? Or both?

Power comes from a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine paired with plug-in hybrid technology, delivering a claimed class-leading thermal efficiency of 47 per cent and around 10 per cent better fuel efficiency than an average diesel powertrain. Chery is also targeting a competitive 1000kg payload and a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.

Off-road credentials are good on paper, with the KP31 confirmed to feature front, centre and rear locking differentials, along with off-road drive modes and a low-range gearbox. Refinement has also been prioritised, with Chery claiming a 30 per cent reduction in vibration compared with conventional diesel setups.

Visually, the concept makes a bold statement, featuring large Chery branding at the front and rear, a snorkel, matte grey paintwork, chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres and a tub rack fitted with 4×4 recovery tracks. Images also suggest minimal wheel-arch intrusion into the tray, which could be a plus for tradies.

The KP31 is built on Chery’s new ‘Kaitan’ ladder-frame platform, designed to support internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and full electric powertrains. While no battery-electric version has been confirmed, a petrol PHEV variant is already locked in for a 2027 release.

The concept measures 5610mm in length, 1920mm in width and 1925mm in height, while the production version will be slightly shorter at 5450mm long.

More details on the KP31 will be revealed closer to its official launch later this year, as Chery prepares to enter one of the most hotly contested segments.
