Chinese brand Forthing is coming to New Zealand
Words: Kyle Cassidy
There’s yet another new Chinese automotive brand set to enter the New Zealand market, with Forthing confirming it will officially launch locally next month.
The debut will be headlined by the Taikon medium SUV range. Forthing NZ reckons it gives Kiwi buyers a fresh option in the increasingly competitive electrified SUV segment. The Taikon will be offered with two distinct powertrains, a full electric variant and a so-called Super Hybrid, across two specification levels, Luxury and Exclusive.

The move marks the latest expansion of Chinese carmakers into New Zealand, with Forthing aiming to combine modern design, electrification and competitive pricing to attract a broad range of buyers. ATECO Group Australia has secured the distribution rights and will be supported by the local team in NZ.
Based in Liuzhou in China’s Guangxi province, the brand draws on more than 70 years of automotive manufacturing experience through its parent company, Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co. As part of its global strategy, Forthing is now focusing heavily on new energy vehicles, targeting international markets with feature-rich, value-driven offerings.

It is said that the Taikon has been designed with everyday usability in mind, pairing a coupe-inspired silhouette with a focus on comfort and versatility. Forthing says the SUV is intended to suit a wide range of lifestyles, from daily commuting to longer road trips.
According to Forthing NZ General Sales Manager Todd Groves, the brand sees strong potential in the local market.

“Our role is to bring New Zealanders competitive new choices that make sense for their lifestyle. The Forthing Taikon, with its compelling blend of design and outstanding value, does exactly that. By launching with both Luxury and Exclusive variants, we’re setting a great value for money option for Kiwi buyers—delivering premium design, pioneering technology, and exceptional value to create serious excitement in the market.”
Under the skin, the 4.6m long Taikon’s flexible platform allows for two different electrified approaches. The fully electric model is expected to deliver a driving range of more than 400km (WLTP). It has a 150kW 240Nm front-mounted motor, which draws from a 64.4kWh battery. Fast charging from 30 to 80 per cent is stated to take 30 minutes.

For buyers seeking additional range and flexibility, the Super Hybrid variant combines a 1.5 petrol engine with electric drive capability. It uses the same 120kW/240Nm but has a smaller 31.9 KWH battery. It can operate as a pure EV for up to 183km, while its combined driving range is claimed to exceed 1000km, reducing the need for frequent charging or refuelling on longer journeys.
All Forthing Taikon models are covered by a seven-year/200,000km factory warranty

Forthing says this dual powertrain strategy is designed to cater to a wide spectrum of customer needs, particularly as New Zealand drivers continue to weigh up the benefits of fully electric vehicles versus hybrid alternatives.
The Taikon range will be backed by a nationwide dealer network, with the brand promising full sales and aftersales support from launch. Further details, including pricing and full specifications, are expected to be announced closer to its arrival.
The Forthing Taikon is scheduled to go on sale in New Zealand from 17 April 2026, with initial vehicles available for immediate delivery.
