Words: Andrew Sluys
The University of Auckland has announced a new $125 million engineering facility, which will be named after Bruce McLaren.
According to a report published by the New Zealand Herald, the Bruce McLaren Centre for High Performance Engineering is set to be built at the University of Auckland’s Newmarket campus.

The university plans to contribute $45 million towards the project, and will fundraise for the remainder of the balance.
The centre will comprise three sections, with the ‘Workshop of Dreams’ representing the main operating space.
This will feature the computers, 3D printers, digital design areas and the structural/aerodynamic testing zones.
The second section is the Bruce McLaren Academy, which is described as an educational “lighthouse” with a focus on research.
Finally, the Innovation Zone will be a historical collage of Bruce’s lifetime achievements, including interactive displays.
Though Bruce McLaren never finished his degree at the University of Auckland (he went racing in Europe instead) his legacy still exists around the campus.
For the last decade, multiple students have received internships with McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing in Woking, London.
