While Ford Australia was busy unveiling its turbo-enhanced stars at the recent Melbourne Motor Show its US counterpart debuted an E85-compliant Escape Hybrid prototype at the Chicago Auto Show.

Claimed as the “the most fuel-efficient SUV on the road today,” the Escape Hybrid is able to run on E85 (85 per cent ethanol) fuel.

It’s also evidence Ford North America is serious about its commitment to an Ethanol Corridor’ initiative through the country’s Midwest, conducted in partnership with state and federal governments and renewable energy company VeraSun. Ford began production of its E85 ‘fuel-flexible’ F-150 pickup in December last year.

“Ethanol can provide relief for customers at the pump and lessen dependence on foreign oil,” said Bill Ford, Chairman and CEO of Ford Motor Company.

“We believe focusing on alternative fuels such as ethanol will bring this issue where it belongs — to the forefront of the national agenda.”

Ford used NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson and green hero Kermit the Frog to promote the hybrid SUV.

When asked what he thought of the Escape, Kermit said: “I look forward to getting my booster seat and extended pedals.” According to Ford, a web advertisement for the Escape Hybrid, featuring Kermit, is in the works.
