Haval H7 heading to NZ with sub-$50,000 starting price
Words: Kyle Cassidy
GWM will add another electrified SUV to its New Zealand line-up in mid-October, with the new Haval H7 set to launch with a starting price below $50,000.

The medium SUV will offer both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, giving buyers a choice between running without a charging routine and plugging in to make greater use of electric driving.
Exact pricing, model grades and local specifications are still to come. The sub-$50,000 figure is the range’s starting point, rather than a confirmed price for both powertrain options.

GWM says both versions will feature its Hi4 technology, combining electrified power with intelligent all-wheel drive. Power outputs, fuel consumption and the plug-in model’s electric range will be announced closer to launch.
The H7’s most obvious point of difference is its shape. Where many medium SUVs favour swept-back profiles and rounded surfaces, the new Haval adopts upright proportions, squared-off lines and more rugged styling.

It will sit alongside the H6, H6GT and forthcoming Jolion Max, broadening the choice within an increasingly busy Haval range.
“The all-new Haval H7 is an exciting addition to our New Zealand line-up and brings something genuinely different to the mid-size SUV segment,” said GWM New Zealand country manager Cameron Thomas.

“Its bold, boxy styling gives it a strong identity, while a starting price of under $50,000 ensures it remains accessible to Kiwi families looking for a distinctive and highly capable SUV.”
Two likely rivals for Kiwi buyers are the Kia Sportage Hybrid and BYD Sealion 6, covering the H7’s two approaches to electrification.

The Sportage Hybrid starts at $49,990 plus on-road costs in HEV Light 2WD form, putting it close to the H7’s intended entry point. The Kia range also includes all-wheel-drive versions, making drivetrain and equipment comparisons worth watching once Haval’s full specifications arrive.
For those considering the H7 plug-in hybrid, the BYD Sealion 6 is another natural comparison. Its NZ range starts with the Essential front-wheel-drive model at $52,990, while an all-wheel-drive Premium version is also offered. How closely the H7 competes on price will depend on where GWM positions its plug-in variants.

GWM is pitching the H7 as a more adventurous-looking family SUV, but the remaining details will establish how much capability sits behind that appearance. Local equipment, powertrain specifications, grades and final prices are due in the coming weeks, ahead of the mid-October on-sale date.
