Mercedes-Benz EQS renews – now with 926km range

Words: Kyle Cassidy

The Mercedes-Benz EQS first launched in 2021, dubiously debuting the Hyperscreen. The EQS has been renewed with Benz saying more than a quarter of all vehicle components are newly-developed, updated and refined.

The new EQS features a next-generation electric architecture. This includes an 800-volt system, new in-house developed electric drive units, a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, and larger batteries with improved cell chemistry. The result is a notable leap in both performance and efficiency, with the EQS 450+ now offering a claimed WLTP range of up to 926km — a 13 percent improvement over its predecessor.

Fast-charging capability has also been enhanced, with outputs of up to 350kW enabling around 320km of range to be added in just 10 minutes. Regenerative braking has been boosted too, with recuperation power of up to 385kW helping to maximise energy recovery.

A major highlight is the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a powerful AI-driven platform that integrates and controls nearly every function of the vehicle. Connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, the system enables over-the-air updates and introduces a more advanced MBUX user experience, including a virtual assistant capable of more natural interaction.

The updated EQS also brings significant changes to the driving experience. Mercedes-Benz will become the first German manufacturer to offer steer-by-wire technology in a production car, delivering a new steering feel while removing the mechanical link between the steering wheel and front axle.

Ride comfort has also been enhanced through an updated AIRMATIC suspension system with predictive damping. Using cloud-based data shared between vehicles, the system can detect upcoming road imperfections such as speed bumps and adjust the suspension in advance for a smoother ride.

Other updates include improved DIGITAL LIGHT headlights, now offering a larger and more efficient illumination field, along with subtle exterior styling revisions. Inside, the Hyperscreen remains a centrepiece, spanning more than 55 inches across the dashboard.

A new entry-level EQS 400 joins the range, offering 270kW and a 112kWh battery, while higher-spec models benefit from increased battery capacity and improved drivetrain efficiency. Vehicle-to-grid capability has also been introduced, further enhancing the EQS’s role in future energy ecosystems.
