Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 140 years since Carl Benz patented the first automobile with a massive overhaul of its flagship S-Class luxury saloon. The 2026 S arrives not just as a mid-life facelift, but as the most ambitious product update in the company’s history, with over 50 per cent of its components—roughly 2,700 parts—newly developed or re-engineered.

S- Class A Radiant New Presence
The new S-Class asserts its dominance with a bolder silhouette and a striking light signature. For the first time, the iconic upright star on the bonnet is optionally self-illuminated, complemented by a redesigned grille that has grown by 20 per cent.
Night driving is transformed by the new DIGITAL LIGHT system. Using micro-LED technology and a powerful new chip, the high-resolution illumination field is 40 per cent larger than the predecessor. The ULTRA RANGE high beam can now swivel and reach up to 600 metres—the length of six soccer fields—while using less energy. At the rear, the identity is reinforced by new taillights featuring three chrome-framed signature stars.

With MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure, customers can choose from more than 150 paint colours and over 400 interior colours for the new S‑Class. Additional equipment choices include illuminated door sills with brand lettering, steering-wheel variants and emblem packages.
The Supercomputer on Wheels
At the heart of the S-Class is the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This purpose-built supercomputer powers everything from semi-autonomous driving to the MBUX infotainment.

The new S-Class models are equipped with a water-cooled supercomputer, providing sufficient power reserves for future functions. To provide top-tier driving assistance, every model comes equipped with a wide array of sensors: ten external cameras, five radar sensors and twelve ultrasonic sensors.
MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO includes enhanced assistance functions3F7F[9] such as automated braking at stop signs and on traffic lights. While the different functions will be available either as a factory-fitted optional extra or as a Digital Extra.

MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO enables a seamless and safe point-to-point driving experience – even in dense urban traffic. Available in China with the market start, the offering in the U.S. will follow later, while other markets, such as Europe, will get the equipment once regulations permit.
The fourth generation of MBUX now integrates a multi-agent AI system featuring ChatGPT-4o, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini. The “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant has evolved into a digital companion capable of complex, multi-turn dialogues and short-term memory, appearing as a living avatar on the display.

Inside, the standard MBUX Superscreen dominates the dashboard, uniting a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch passenger display under a single glass surface. Rear passengers aren’t left out, with two 13.1-inch displays and detachable remote controls that turn the back seat into a mobile business lounge or a cinema featuring apps like Disney+ and RIDEVU.
S-Class Power, Efficiency, and “Simply Clever” Comfort
Under the bonnet, Mercedes-Benz has refined its electrified powertrain lineup:
S 580 4MATIC: A V8 biturbo (M 177 Evo) producing 395 kW and 750 Nm.
S 450 / S 500: Upgraded six-cylinder petrol engines with a new “overtorque” function for easier overtaking.
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): Now offers an electric-only range of approximately 100 km.
Diesel: New six-cylinder OM 656 Evo units designed to meet future emissions standards.

All engines feature a 17 kW Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) and a 48-volt electrical system for seamless coasting and fuel savings.
Comfort has been elevated to “Welcome Home” levels. A standout feature is the heated seat belt, which warms to 44°C to provide a “gentle embrace” on cold mornings. Meanwhile, a new electric filter ionises the cabin air, removing particles 1,200 times smaller than a grain of salt every 90 seconds.

Precision Handling and Ultimate Protection
Driving dynamics are enhanced by AIRMATIC air suspension and optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL. A new “intelligent damping” system uses cloud-based data to detect and adjust for speed bumps before the car even hits them. Standard rear-axle steering (up to 10°) reduces the turning circle of the long-wheelbase model by nearly two metres, making tight urban manoeuvres effortless.

For those requiring the ultimate in security, the S 680 GUARD 4MATIC returns. It is the only series-production limousine to offer certified VR10 ballistic protection—the highest civilian level—protecting against both transparent and opaque threats while powered by a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo.
