MG has posted full pricing and specification for its new MGS6 EV on its New Zealand website, locking in the numbers for the premium electric SUV some weeks before it reaches showrooms.

The range opens at $56,990 for the Essence RWD, with the dual-motor Essence AWD listed from $63,990. Both figures are before on-road costs, in line with MG’s usual approach.

The prices land close to the estimate we ran when the car was detailed in Australia. We picked a local entry of around $54,000 to $55,000 for the RWD and the low-to-mid $60,000s for the AWD. The confirmed figures put the RWD a little above that mark and the AWD squarely within it.

There is a ceiling, too. At $63,990 the AWD still sits under the $66,900 entry to MG’s premium IM6, so the brand has kept clear air between its mainstream and premium electric ranges, as we suggested it would want to.

What you get

Both variants run a 77kWh NCM battery. The Essence RWD pairs a single rear motor making 180kW and 350Nm with up to 530km of WLTP range and a 7.5-second 0 to 100km/h time. The Essence AWD adds a front motor for 266kW and 540Nm combined, dropping the sprint to 5.1 seconds while range eases back to 485km.

Both support 144kW DC charging for a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in a claimed 38 minutes, and each adds an 11kW onboard AC charger, a heat pump, vehicle-to-load, One Pedal Mode and five-stage adjustable regen. Towing is rated at 750kg unbraked and 1500kg braked.

Built on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, the MGS6 EV measures 4708mm long on a 2835mm wheelbase. Boot space is 581 litres with the rear seats up and 1690 litres folded, plus a frunk of 86 litres on the RWD or 67 litres on the AWD.

Inside, both versions carry a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver display, a head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 50W wireless charging and an 11-speaker stereo with subwoofer. Vegan leather seats with suede trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, 20-inch alloys and the full MG Pilot driver assistance suite with seven airbags all feature as standard.

The clearest split between the two is the roof. The AWD adds a panoramic glassroof with electric sunshade, which the RWD goes without. Dover White is the standard paint, with six metallic finishes optional across the range.

As with the rest of the line-up, the MGS6 EV is covered by up to 10 years or 250,000km of warranty when serviced with MG, made up of seven years unlimited as standard plus a three-year service-activated extension.

How it stacks up

Pricing is the MGS6 EV’s strongest argument. The default picks in this part of the market all sit well above it. A Tesla Model Y RWD starts at $67,900 and the Long Range AWD at $77,900, the BYD Sealion 7 runs from $67,990 for the Premium to $79,990 for the Performance, and the Kia EV5 opens at $67,990. The MGS6 EV RWD undercuts that trio by around $11,000, and even the dual-motor AWD comes in roughly $4000 under an entry Model Y or Sealion 7 while adding a second motor. The closest thing to a price rival is the XPeng G6, which opens at $59,990 and lists its Long Range RWD at $63,900.

On range, the MG is competitive. The RWD’s 530km clears the Model Y RWD’s 466km and the Sealion 7 Premium’s 482km, and sits within reach of the longer-legged Kia EV5. The AWD is the standout on value, its 5.1-second sprint quicker than a pricier Model Y RWD or Sealion 7 Premium.

It gives a little ground on outright size and badge. The Model Y offers a bigger boot and frunk, and both it and the Kia carry larger batteries. The MG counters on warranty, its potential 10 years and 250,000km going well beyond Tesla’s five and BYD’s six.

That leaves the MGS6 EV as the value option in the premium mid-size EV class, using price, range and warranty against rivals that are bigger or better-known. In its own price band, the car to watch is the XPeng G6.
