The list of companies deciding to build electric cars continues to grow, and it’s getting stranger.

Dreame Technology, best known for its high-end robotic vacuum cleaners, has confirmed it will unveil a production-intent electric hypercar at CES in Las Vegas on January 7. Yes, that Dreame.

The Chinese consumer electronics brand claims the car, developed under the internal codename Starry Sky Plan, will produce more than 1000hp (745kW) and accelerate from 0–100km/h in under two seconds. If those figures hold up, Dreame would be pitching directly at established EV heavyweights such as the Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.

According to the company, the leap from vacuum cleaners to hypercars is less ridiculous than it sounds. Dreame’s core expertise lies in ultra-high-speed electric motors. The same digital motors used in its vacuum cleaners are capable of spinning at up to 200,000rpm. That knowledge, Dreame says, has been scaled up for automotive use, with the EV’s drive units reportedly cooled using a refrigerant-based system to keep operating temperatures around 15°C, even under heavy load.

Teaser images, pulled from a video circulating Chinese social media, ahead of CES show a low-slung coupe with a silhouette that will look familiar to anyone who has seen a Bugatti Chiron. Design cues include a pronounced C-shaped side profile, a hidden A-pillar and a large active rear wing, although Dreame insists this is a clean-sheet electric vehicle rather than a design exercise.

Unlike some concept-heavy CES reveals of the past, Dreame says this project is intended to reach production. The company claims it has established a dedicated automotive division in Shanghai, employing more than 1000 staff, to develop the car and its underlying technology.

Whether Dreame’s first car proves to be a genuine hypercar contender or simply a very ambitious statement piece will become clearer when the covers come off in Las Vegas. Either way, the idea of a vacuum cleaner brand entering the 1000hp EV arms race says plenty about how fast, and how oddly, the electric car landscape is evolving.
