Volkswagen reveaIs ID. Polo

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Volkswagen has revealed the all-new Volkswagen ID. Polo, bringing the little hatch into the electric era.

Unveiled as a fully electric replacement for the long-running Polo in Europe the ID. Polo is positioned as an affordable entry point into Volkswagen’s EV line-up, said to combine compact dimensions with improved space, range and technology.

Electric power and range

The ID. Polo will be offered in Europe with front-wheel drive and three power outputs: 85kW, 99kW and 155kW. Entry-level models use a 37kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering up to 329km of WLTP driving range, while higher-spec versions feature a larger 52kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery capable of up to 454km.

DC fast charging is standard across the range, with both battery options able to charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 23–24 minutes under ideal conditions.

Compact size, bigger space

Measuring just over four metres in length, the ID. Polo remains firmly in the small car segment, but benefits from Volkswagen’s dedicated EV platform to maximise interior space.

Boot capacity has increased to 441 litres – up from 351 litres in the petrol-powered Polo – expanding to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded. Volkswagen says the improved packaging makes the five-seat hatch more versatile for everyday use, from commuting to weekend trips.

New design direction

The ID. Polo is the first production model to adopt Volkswagen’s new ‘Pure Positive’ design language, developed under chief designer Andreas Mindt. The look blends clean proportions with familiar cues such as a strong C-pillar and modern lighting signatures, giving the compact EV a more upmarket appearance.

Inside, the cabin has been completely reworked, with a focus on digital interfaces and improved materials. A 10-inch digital instrument cluster sits alongside a centrally mounted 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, while optional features include a passenger display and premium finishes.

Tech upgrades and new features

Volkswagen has also introduced a range of new technology features, including enhanced driver assistance systems and improved connectivity.

A standout addition is Connected Travel Assist, which can support steering, acceleration and braking while also recognising traffic lights in certain conditions. One-pedal driving is standard, allowing drivers to control acceleration and deceleration using just the accelerator pedal.

The ID. Polo also gains vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, enabling it to power external devices such as e-bikes or camping equipment with up to 3.6kW output.

Equipment and options

Features across the range include LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, wireless smartphone connectivity and advanced safety systems. Higher-spec versions add matrix LED headlights, upgraded interior materials, ambient lighting and comfort features such as heated seats and dual-zone climate control.

Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic glass roof and even massaging front seats – features typically reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles.

Volkswagen’s electric push continues

Thomas Schäfer said the new model plays a key role in making EV ownership more accessible.

“The ID. Polo brings a Volkswagen bestseller into the electric age. For decades, the Polo has been part of people’s everyday lives. With the ID. Polo, we are making electric mobility accessible to many more people: with clear and timeless design, intuitive operation, strong quality and technologies from higher segments. A genuine Volkswagen just like our customers expect from us.”

While New Zealand availability has yet to be confirmed, the ID. Polo signals Volkswagen’s continued push to bring more affordable electric vehicles to global markets.
