Watch – testing the tyres for the Bugatti Tourbillon

The development of the Bugatti Tourbillon has reached another key milestone, with engineers completing the tyre validation programme at Michelin’s Ladoux proving ground in France.

While the Tourbillon’s 1800hp output figures grab attention, Bugatti says one of the most important components of the new hypercar is far less glamorous: its tyres.

The French marque has revealed details of the testing programme in the latest episode of its A New Era documentary series, highlighting the work undertaken to develop a tyre capable of handling the immense performance demands of its next-generation flagship.

The Ladoux tests formed part of a wider global development programme that has already taken the Tourbillon to winter testing facilities in Sweden and high-speed validation runs at Italy’s Nardò circuit. With production drawing closer, Bugatti’s engineers are now focusing on refining the vehicle’s final dynamic characteristics.

Leading the testing effort is Bugatti’s Chief Test and Development Driver, Miroslav Zrnčević, who describes his role as helping shape the overall personality of the car.

“If it was a kitchen, I would be the taster,” said Zrnčević. “I’m working with different engineering teams to develop the character of the car – controls, vehicle dynamics, everything else.”

The goal at Ladoux was to identify the best tyre package from three final Michelin prototypes developed specifically for the Tourbillon. The tyre options had already been narrowed down from numerous concepts through months of simulation work and virtual testing.

Bugatti and Michelin evaluated the tyres across a variety of scenarios, including high-speed cornering, handling tests and stability assessments. Engineers combined objective performance data with driver feedback to determine which specification best suited the hypercar’s intended character.

The partnership between Bugatti and Michelin stretches back to the development of the original Veyron. Since then, the two companies have worked together on every Bugatti hypercar, continually developing tyre technology to keep pace with ever-increasing levels of power and performance.

For the Tourbillon, however, the challenge was greater than ever.

Compared with the Chiron, the new model delivers more power, stronger acceleration and a higher performance envelope, requiring an entirely new tyre rather than an evolution of an existing design.

According to Bugatti, the tyres were developed alongside the vehicle itself, with engineers from both companies working closely together to translate driver impressions into measurable engineering targets.

“The tyre is the most important part,” said Zrnčević. “You only have four small contact patches connecting the car to the ground. What happens there defines everything else.”

One of the biggest challenges was timing. Tyre development had to progress simultaneously with the evolution of the vehicle, meaning key decisions were made before every system had reached its final specification.

Alongside physical testing, Bugatti says simulation technology played a major role in the Tourbillon programme, with engineers spending more than three years refining the vehicle in virtual environments before final validation.

Even so, Bugatti’s Head of Vehicle Dynamics, Tomislav Šimunić, believes human feedback remains irreplaceable.

“In the end, we are developing cars for people,” he said. “We cannot develop everything just with computer technology. We need the drivers and this emotional, subjective factor in the whole story.”

With the preferred tyre package now selected, Bugatti can move into the next phase of development, fine-tuning the Tourbillon’s steering, suspension and electronic control systems around the chosen Michelin rubber.
