Aston Martin’s new Valhalla Spider goes faster without a roof

Words: Andrew Sluys

Aston Martin has unveiled its new Valhalla Spider, which arrives as the drop-top version of its flagship supercar.

Like the Valhalla coupe, it is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 paired with three electric motors to create its plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

With two motors on the front axle, and one on the transmission, peak outputs sit at a hefty 793kW and 1100Nm of torque.

While this glut of power and torque doesn’t come as a surprise, what is surprising is how Aston Martin will have you use it.

With the fabric roof fitted, the Valhalla Spider is limited to a top speed of 200km/h. Remove this roof and the top speed lifts to an Autobahn-storming 350km/h.

It’s also worth pointing out that 350km/h is achievable with the carbon fibre hardtop in place, so speeding in the rain is still an option.

As you’d expect, top speed isn’t the only goal here, as this Valhalla Spider will also hit 100km/h from a standing start in just 2.5-seconds.

Aston Martin have given the Spider a wind deflector, a snorkel (for the engine), and active aero that has been adjusted for roofless activities.

There’s also a new ‘Touring Seat’ that comes as standard, which is meant to be more comfortable for long drives. The original carbon seats are still available to those that hate being comfortable.

According to a report published by Top Gear, the allocations for this Valhalla are “mostly” exhausted, meaning any well-paid friends of yours will need to get in quick.

They also note that Aston expects one in four Valhallas sold to be of the drop-top variety, making this quite a rarity on the road.
