GWM to expand local ute offering with plug-in hybrid Cannon ute 

GWM New Zealand has announced the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV ute will soon be joining its local line-up. 

The brand’s local arm claims it “will become one of New Zealand’s most affordable plug-in hybrid utes” on its arrival. 

This new Cannon features the GWM Hi4-T system that is already offered with the larger Cannon Alpha ute, plus the local Tank range.

It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, combining to produce 310kW and 750Nm. 

The benefit of the Hi4-T means it still uses a traditional transmission and mechanical four-wheel drive system, despite its hybrid features. 

Claimed fuel economy sits at an impressive 2.4L/100km, but it’s worth noting that is achieved through more lenient NEDC testing. 

It also gets a 33.1kWh battery, which provides an electric driving range of up to 115km, again according to NEDC testing. 

Both of these power sources combine to provide a total driving range of 1,037km. 

It also retains the standard Cannon’s 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity. 

GWM New Zealand has confirmed local pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to the local launch date. 

Customers are encouraged to register their interest through the GWM website, as arrivals are expected in late September/early October.
