Six-seat version of GWM’s Tank 700 shown in Chinese government filings

Words: Andrew Sluys

The long-wheelbase version of GWM’s Tank 700 is the latest vehicle to be uncovered by Chinese government filings.

A new file published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has shown the 5.4-metre SUV ahead of its official launch.

Sitting on an extended 3,150mm wheelbase, this version builds upon the standard Tank 700 with three rows of seating.

Instead of the traditional seven-seat configuration that we are used to in our part of the world, this Tank 700 has seating for six occupants.

These seats are arranged in a 2+2+2 layout, which is made possible by a wheelbase increase of 340mm. This version is also 65mm wider, and 36mm taller.

Styling follows the same theme as the standard Tank 700, with a very squared-off overall aesthetic.

Beneath the bonnet this Tank 700 is offered with a choice of two powertrains, with the entry-level model getting a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system. Combined outputs sit at 185kW and 385Nm.

The standard Tank 700 was unveiled in Beijing earlier this year

This Hi4-Z variant features a 59.05kWh battery, and can cover up to 190 (WLTP) off a single charge.

The other variant gains a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 265kW.

No matter which powertrain is selected, this Tank 700 LWB is rated to tow up to 2.5-tonnes (braked) in China.

Earlier this year, we sat down with GWM chairman Jack Wei at the Beijing Auto Show, where he revealed another engine option for this Tank 700.

“The Tank 700 will also receive a V8, although it will be a different engine to the supercar,” Wei said. “Both high-performance and off-road V8s are being developed for global use.”

At the event, a GWM Australia and New Zealand spokesperson confirmed to NZ Autocar that the Tank 700 has long been under consideration for both markets, but has consistently been linked to a new or updated platform rather than the current China-market vehicle.

That indicates the V8 is unlikely to land in the current Tank 700 form, and would more likely arrive in an updated version of the model, such as this long-wheelbase version.
