Ineos’ Grenadier gets a very Defender Classic-esque makeover
Words: Andrew Sluys
When Land Rover announced the death of the classic Defender, a lot of die-hard fans were very upset with this decision, but none seemingly more than Ineos CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
He figured that if Land Rover wasn’t going to build the Defender everyone actually wanted, he’d use his significant worth to do it himself, and the Ineos Grenadier was born.

From the very start, the inspiration for the Grenadier was no secret, and it seemingly scratched the itch for those wanting a more classic looking SUV, paired with a modern powertrain and interior.
If the Grenadier in standard form wasn’t Defender-y enough, the long-time Land Rover modifying Chelsea Truck Company has revealed a very convincing body kit, penned by afzalkhan.
Dubbed the “Heritage Remastered” programme, this kit makes the Grenadier look a lot like the immensely popular Defender Heritage Edition released in 2015.

It starts with the green paint, which is quite similar to the Grasmere Green hue used on the original Defender.
It also gets paint-matched alloy wheels, fender flares, large bonnet, and a distinctive criss-crossed front grille.
The metal bumpers and contrasting white roof also leans into this heritage look.

For those looking to be a bit more modern with their classic Defender replica, a black and silver version was also revealed, taking inspiration from the SVX 60th Anniversary Edition.
Beneath this quirky exterior, the Grenadier’s internals remain the same, powered by 3.0-litre BMW engines.
In the United Kingdom, the Chelsea Truck Company is selling these re-styled Grenadiers at around a $22,000 premium over the standard SUV.
