MX-6e: Mazda files patent hinting at new electric sports car
Words: Andrew Sluys
Mazda has filed for an “MX-6e” trademark in multiple countries, which points towards an evolution of its old two-door coupe.
While it’s the MX-5 that everyone loved, the MX-6 spent a bit of time in the spotlight, produced for ten years from 1987.

Despite the same ethos of less weight, more fun being taken from the MX-5, and applied here, it never found the same cult following.
This could have been because it was based on the Ford Probe, and featured a front-wheel drive powertrain.
Fast forward a few decades, and it looks like Mazda is gearing up to re-purpose the MX-6’s badge as an electrified sports car.
According to a report published by Carbuzz, Mazda has filed this MX-6e trademark across multiple countries including the United States of America, Peru and Germany.
While it remains unclear as to what this MX-6e might look like, Mazda’s current naming structure has us convinced it’s some sort of electric/hybrid machine.

Currently, Mazda sells the 6e sedan and CX-6e SUV locally, which are both all-electric. They are also produced in partnership with Chinese manufacturer Changan.
It’s also anyone’s guess as to what this MX-6e could look like, especially considering the MX-30 broke the old naming convention, and landed as a small SUV.
It’s also unlikely to utilise the new rotary engine that Mazda has been teasing for some time now, but we’d just be happy with a new sports car from the brand.
